How do I look up my horse's pedigree? ›

Pedigrees for Thoroughbreds as well as many other horses can be found at www.allbreedpedigree.com , though care should be taken to verify all pedigrees. Like the well-known Wikipedia website, www.allpedigree.com allows users to input data, which may or may not be precise.

Pedigree refers to a horse's family tree, with its paternal ancestors- sire/father – on the top, and its maternal ancestors – dam/mother – on the bottom. A horse's pedigree provides insight into its potential ability and value as well as what type of racing your horse will be most suited to.

Check the records

Organisations such as British Eventing publish competition records on their websites or allow you to access them for a small fee, so go online to see if your horse has a listing, or write to or call their offices.

When reading Quarter Horse pedigrees, remember that the sire will be on top, and the dam will be on the bottom. The tree reads from left to right, with each successive generation branching out. The dam's mother is known as the second dam, and her mother is the third dam, etc.

Horses with N/H genotype can display episodes of hyperkalemic periodic paralysis. Horses with this genotype are heterozygous for the variant that makes them susceptible to sporadic episodes of muscle tremors or paralysis; clinical symptoms and frequency of episodes depends on other factors such as diet and exercise.

The test is reasonably good but there is no way to determine how accurate it is. If a purebred horse is tested it will almost always be assigned to the correct breed.
